James Toney Interview

Hey James thanks for taking this interview with ReplayMMA.com. We are excited to see such a decorated professional boxer compete in MMA. It will be great to see how boxing compares to wrestling! Since we are an MMA site after all we are going to try to stick with Mixed Martial Arts questions. We asked our sites visitors to give us five questions to ask James Toney. There was a great response so the last five questions we are going to ask are from your fans! Alright let’s begin the interview.

Q: People are calling this Dana Whites biggest mistake ever. What is your view on Dana’s choice to let you fight in the UFC?

JT: It’s only a mistake if Dana expects me to go down in flames. But I think he’s really interested to see what will happen between a boxing champion and a top MMA guy. Dana is smart. He knows that his customers want to find out too.

Q: When it comes to freak shows Dana White is not a fan wouldn’t you consider this to be a freak show?

JT: I’m offended by that question. It’s about two fighters with pride giving everything they got to prove something.

Q: When interviewed at UFC 116 you said Randy Couture should not be considered a hall of famer if he still fights in the UFC. Are you saying that the UFC is flawed compared to other sports?

JT: Did I say that? Then I must have been playing with Randy’s head.

Q: Win or lose in UFC 118, are you going to try and continue to fight in the UFC or other MMA organizations?

JT: I don’t think about losing. I’m having fun and plan to alternate MMA with championship boxing.

Q: You are out to prove a point that Boxing/Boxers are better than MMA/MMA fighters. What happens if you lose? How can you prove your better?

JT: You want me to talk about the L word again? You know what they say in
New York. Fagetaboutit !!!

Q: Randy Couture is known for his wrestling he has won multiple championships for Greco Wrestling how do you plan to keep the fight standing up?

JT: I’m ready for whatever Randy’s got. How’s he gonna be able to Greco when he’s knocked out?

Q: You said “When I hit someone with 4 ounce gloves, I could go to jail for homicide.” Do you think you’ll knock Randy out? If so how long into the fight before you knock him out?
JT: I will knock Randy out. You tell me what round it will be. Here’s another idea. Ask Randy when he’s going Lights Out.

Q: Randy Couture told ESPN that he intends to use the cage game more than the striking game against you. You think you’ll be ready?

JT: Ready? Watch August 28th and you’ll see how ready I am. What did you think? That Couture was planning on having a boxing match with me? Come on, man.

Q: How is training for MMA different then training for boxing?
JT: It’s more fun. Learning all his new stuff. I’ve been boxing since I
was a kid. And I have great trainers. They say I’m as coachable as when I was a high school quarterback.

Q: Dana White gave you the option to fight light heavyweight or heavyweight. What made you pick heavyweight?
JT: Duh!!! I’m a heavyweight is why. I’ve won world championships in
five weight divisions. Middleweight, Supermiddleweight, Lightheavyweight,
Cruiserweight and heavyweight. Anybody else come into MMA with those
credentials?

Q: A lot of people in the MMA world are saying you are past your prime. What would you like to tell them?

JT: Tell them to step up when I’m done with Randy August 28. Runnin
their mouth is easy. It’s here for them if they want some.

Q: Why hasn’t there been any video of your progress in MMA?

JT: Get together with your friends August 28, plunk down a few dollars,
come up with $49.95, and you’ll see all the live action you pay for. Turn on
your recorders. Now you’ll have your own historic video. Or show up in Boston. How’s that?

Q: Who do you think is the best boxer in world, past and present not considering yourself?

JT: Past, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis,Archie Moore, Jersey Joe, Ezzard
Charles. Present? Besides myself? I don’t want to hurt any of my fellow champions
feelings by leaving anyone out. But they call me a throw- back fighter to the guys that I’ve named.

Q: What boxing coach had the most influence in your boxing style? Was it Bill Miller?

JT: Right. Bill Miller comes to mind first. There are a couple of others.

Q: Is there anything that you would like to tell the entire MMA world?

JT: August 28. Pay Per View from Boston. August 28. Pay Per View from
Boston. August 28. Pay Per View from Boston.
History will be made. MMA and Boxing Fans will be talking about it for
years. You’ll be telling your grandchildren. Don’t miss it.

Once again James thanks for giving ReplayMMA.com the time to interview you. We hope the fans got the answers they wanted out of the questions they asked. Bill Caplan we would like to thank you as well for making this happen! James good luck at UFC 118 in Boston!
Thanks, Jake Eisenberg
